Pilgrimage amidst water and stars through Añisclo Canyon and Sestrales

Reconnecting with Nature and its cycles with a Yoga & Meditative Trekking Retreat

3-day excursion ascending and exploring the corners of the mythical Sestrales Mountain and Añisclo Canyon, Ordesa National Park.

In this journey we will alternate the Meditative Trekking with practices of Yoga Asanas, Meditation and Meditative Movement in nature.

RESILIENT RESPONSE: RATES ACCORDING TO YOUR POSSIBILITIES

We have decided to change the remuneration formula for all our retreats. Now the retreat rates include only full board accommodation, taxes and accident and liability insurance. Teachings and activities are offered on donation basis. In this way we make the experience more accessible for those who are in a more delicate financial situation. This is a great opportunity to cultivate generosity and trust.

RATES INCLUDE

All meals made with love in our vegetarian kitchen.

6 nights of accommodation, 4 in Casa Cuadrau and 2 nights sleeping in nature (in tents or mountain retreat).

All taxes, public liability and accident insurance for activities: hiking and yoga.

AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

Content of the retreat

We will dedicate Days 1 and 2 to physically and mentally prepare for the pilgrimage experience. We will do this in Casa Cuadrau and the surrounding areas, by practicing yoga, meditating, going on meditative walks and sharing learnings and experiences during satsangs. Also, we will go through our backpacks, we will help you organise it, as well as explain the route and details of the trip. 

On Day 3 we will embark on this exciting 3-day pilgrimage through the marvellous mountains. We will discover some of the wildest and most magical places in the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, through our own experience and the facilitation of Daniel Benito and Leandro Sancholu, both professional mountain guides, specialised in nature interpretation. Daniel is also a yoga and meditation instructor, and he will offer us his holistic vision of the pilgrimage, through meditative movement sessions, pranayama and the possibility to meditate surrounded by nature.

We will dedicate the last day of the retreat, once we have returned, to rest, relax and share experiences. Throughout this day, Katya and Dani will offer meditation, restorative yoga, massage and guided relaxation sessions. This way, we will be ready to go back home, completely transformed and filled with energy and vitality.

Route description

The route we will take is accessible if you are in acceptable physical shape and a minimum of experience mountain hikes. This route is a good option to initiate yourself in trekking or multiple-day hikes, sleeping in nature.

We will leave Casa Cuadrau with a backpack on our backs, filled with those things that are truly essential to satisfy our needs. During the 3 days, we will be completely self-sufficient. Sleeping, cooking and eating in nature and through our own means, i.e. without the support of facilities such as hostels or refuges. We will use that which Mother Nature has to offer to establish our camp with the things we carry with us.

On the first day of our pilgrimage, we will walk down the marked GR-15.1 trail, reaching the San Urbez hermitage. After meeting this inspiring local saint, we will walk up the Añisclo Gorge. On this day, the most demanding of the pilgrimage, we will walk 17 Kms. and we will gain, progressively, +1000 mts. of elevation. This gorge is one of the gems of the Pyrenees, both because of its rocky cliffs’ extraordinary beauty, as well as its exuberant biodiversity. In this wild botanical museum, there are more plant species than in the whole United Kingdom. A magical place, where we will be able to dive deep into an authentic forest bath. We will enjoy the pools and waterfalls in a high mountain virgin river that will offer us a dreamy accommodation in Fuenblanca (1800 mts.).

On the second day of our pilgrimage, we will leave the gorge through the Grau de Foratiello, passing through San Vicenda, paradise for cattle during this time of the year. From here we will enjoy beautiful panoramic views of Monte Perdido, Sesa mountain and overlooking the Añisclo Gorge. We will walk through Plana Canal, ascending through the Tozal de la Fueva, to reach the peak of Sestrales (2.101 mts.), the summit of our pilgrimage. This powerful mountain will offer us a fantastic place to sleep under the light of the stars, where we will be able to contemplate the immensity of the Milky Way, and feel part of the immensity of the cosmos.

On the third day of our pilgrimage, we will circle Sestrales and, after a steep downhill of more than 1.200 mts of elevation drop, again going through majestic mixed forests, which will lead us to the Romanic Bridge of San Urbez, that we will cross again after three unforgettable days of hiking. From there, the only thing left is the last uphill to leave the bottom of the gorge and return home, and this way concluding a transformative and powerful pilgrimage experience where we will face our difficulties and overcome our fears.

DAY 2

  • Route difficulty: Moderate
  • Total distance: 12 Kms.
  • Elevation gain/drop: +874 m. -489 m.
  • Total time walking: 7h
  • Terrain: Marked trails for the most part, with irregular terrain in specific parts.

Schedule:

  • 8:00 h. Leave Fuenblanca
  • 10:30 h. Lunch at Foratiello
  • 14:00 h. Rest and snack
  • 19:00 h. Dinner, set camp in Sestrales and rest.

DAY 3

  • Route difficulty: Moderate
  • Total distance: 10 Kms.
  • Elevation gain/drop: +644 m. -1.240 m.
  • Total time walking: 7h
  • Terrain: Marked trails for the most part, with irregular terrain and even the need to use hands at times.

Schedule:

  • 8:00 h. Leave Sestrales
  • 10:30 h. Lunch at Portal de Belén
  • 14:00 h. Rest and snack
  • 16:00 h. Arrival at Casa Cuadrau

Meditative Hiking

The long trekking help us to understand, through experience, our deep connection with nature.

This practice makes us notice in each step and in each breath, that the energy that exist inside us it is just the same as the energy that exists out there. Nature is our greatest teacher, silence and deep listening helps us enrich the experience She offers.

FAQ

What is the level of difficulty of the trek?
The level of difficulty is medium and may include sections with certain challenges.

People with little or no prior mountain experience, and a good physical condition, had no problem doing it.

Do you need to be well trained or is it something more relaxed?
You need to have a good physical condition and some experience in this kind of physical activity.

How many hours are we expected to walk per day?
About 8 hours per the day, including pauses for meals, interpretation of nature, etc. Approximately there will be around 6 hours of active walk.

The time of activity in the mountains can always vary depending on the conditions of the group and/or the weather.

Will the trek be very difficult and with big differences in elevation?
Technically they are not very difficult. However, you should to take into account the hours of walking and occasional steep slopes, both positive and negative.

Where will we sleep?
In two-person tents, shepherd’s huts (without services of any kind) and, if weather is favorable, in bivouacs.

Does everyone carry their backpack (including tents) or will they be carried to the destination every day?
Everybody will carry their backpack with their personal equipment (clothes, sleeping bag, mat, etc …) and food, which will be distributed among the whole group. The tents and collective material (stoves, pots …) will be carried by the guides.

How much weight will we have to carry?
To a large extent, the weight you will carry depends how much you stick to the proposed “what to wear” list. If you limit yourself to this list and you carry light technical equipment, the backpack should not weigh more than 8-10 kg, including the weight of the food supplied by the team.

Is the trek in silence?
In the mornings, we will try to cultivate joyful silence, especially when walking.
However, in the interpretative stops, breaks, etc., we will have time to share experiences.

Will we practice yoga daily?
Before leaving for the daily walk and at the end of the day, we will spend a few minutes practicing Sun Salutations and some yoga asanas to stretch and relax the body.

  • Technical trekking backpack (55 L minimum): There should be room for the food that we supply daily

  • Light and insulating mat (Yoga mats are NOT appropriate)

The retreat starts on Monday, July 13th at 16h. There will be an introduction, yoga class and opening, followed by a dinner and a meditation.
The retreat finishes on Sunday, July 19th at 12, after brunch. .
